BNTVA Memorial Leeds

The Leeds memorial to the British Nuclear Veterans was the result of the activities of the West Yorkshire Branch of the BNTVA. Sited in the grounds of Leeds Minster its care was given over to the Minster who continue to tend the memorial today. As part of the Remembrance Project of the NCCF, the memorial was restored and rededicated on the 7th October 2018. In the following Evensong Service, the Standard of the West Yorkshire Branch of the BNTVA was laid up in the Minster.

As part of the NCCF Remembrance Project, the Nuclear Veterans memorial at Leeds was selected for refurbishment and rededication. The memorial is tended by volunteers at Leeds Minster where it is sited and only required a specialist clean to ease the dirt buildup of recent years.

On the 7th of October 2018, Veterans and their families began to gather at the Minster where at 16:00 hours the Rector, Canon Sam Chorley commenced the rededication ceremony. Attended by Her Majesties representative The Lord Lieutenant of West Yorkshire, The Lord Mayor and the Lady Mayoress of Leeds, The Deputy Leader of Leeds City Council, and Nuclear Free Local Authorities English Forum Chair, Councillor David Blackburn and other public dignitaries, Nuclear Veteran Brian Gay proudly unveiled the restored memorial. A reading was given during the service by veterans son and former BNTVA Chairman, Nigel Heaps MBE which was followed by a laying of wreaths. Lord Lieutenant of West Yorkshire laid a wreath on behalf of the Queen, Martin Blackburn, also the son of a veteran and Trustee of the NCCF laid a wreath on behalf of the NCCF and Mr Eric Barton, Nuclear Veteran and Trustee of the BNTVA laid a wreath on behalf of the BNTVA.

During the Evensong service following the dedication the Standard of the West Yorkshire Branch of the BNTVA was laid up in the care of the Minster. Standards are displayed in the Minster to the left of the altar.
